Muriel Spark event: Aberdeen, 4 November 2018

I was one of twelve writers awarded an Endless Different Ways grant by Creative Scotland, as part of the Muriel Spark 100 celebrations. At this event, you can hear what I wrote in Jerusalem, and participate in a workshop - oh, and there’s a fantastic buffet.

ALL WELCOME!

SCoJeC (the Scottish Council of Jewish Communities) is proudly participating in this year's European Days of Jewish Culture. The theme of this annual event is Storytelling, and we will be joined by Edinburgh-based writer Tracey S. Rosenberg to help us get in to the spirit!

As part of the celebrations for the Muriel Spark centenary, Tracey was awarded a Creative Scotland grant to write a fictional response to Spark's award-winning novel The Mandelbaum Gate. Set in the divided city of Jerusalem of the mid-1960s, Spark's novel addresses, among other issues, complex interpretations of Jewish identity.

In this event, Tracey will read her fictional response to Spark, The Western Wall, in which three modern young women with varying religious and political views wrestle with their own personal identities and narratives. There will then be time for questions and general discussion before a break, during which SCoJeC will serve a delicious kosher buffet.

The second part of the event will be an informal writing workshop, in which Tracey will use short exercises to help participants to explore their own questions of identity. Everyone will be encouraged (but not required) to share these stories with the group.

This event is presented by The Scottish Council of Jewish Communities and Live Literature, which is supported by Creative Scotland and managed by Scottish Book Trust (Scottish Charity SC027669). We acknowledge the generous support of Netherlee and Clarkston Charitable Trust (Scottish Charity SC042072), Jewish Renaissance (Registered Charity 1152871), and European Days of Jewish Culture.
